SAFARI Montage 1.2.2 Release Notes

Released: 4/1/2006

SAFARI Montage version 1.2.2 is the first public release of the 1.2 version. Versions 1.2 and 1.2.1 were alpha and beta versions, released to a select group of test sites and pilot partners.

CreationStation

The primary focus of this release is to support the new CreationStation add-on module. CreationStation contains the features outlined below. You will only see these features if you have the CreationStation module installed.

Uploadable Content

Upload your original video, audio, and image files to SAFARI Montage. The following formats are supported.

Video Formats
  • Windows Media Video (.wmv)
  • Quicktime (.mov)
  • MPEG4 (.mp4, .mov)
Image Formats
  • JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
  • GIF (.gif)
  • Bitmap (.bmp)
Audio Formats
  • MPEG3 (.mp3)

Metadata

Assign your own metadata to your uploaded content, such as title, author, description (abstract), grade range, and copyright.

Video Segmentation

Divide your videos into labeled chapters and key concepts, allowing easy access to segments that you designate.

Access Control

Specify who may view your uploaded content - teachers, students, other uploaders, or everyone.

Playlists

Save your uploaded video, audio, and still images into playlists for quick playback in the future. Save your video chapters, key concepts, and bookmarks to playlists. Combine your content with SAFARI Montage licensed content. Playlists can be shared to other users within the system.

Content Expiration

Make your content expire on a certain date, rendering it invisible from that date forward to all users except you and the system administrator.

Attachments

Upload your own supplemental documents to associate with your content, or hyperlink to a document on the Internet or your intranet/extranet. Supplemental documents can include a teacher's guide, a data sheet, and an additional document of your choosing. Attachments can be of nearly any format, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, and image formats such as GIF, JPEG, and BMP.

Searchable Content

Your content becomes fully indexed by the powerful SAFARI Montage search engine so users can easily find your content. A new advanced search feature allows filtering by media type (image, video, audio).

Bulk Media Upload

Upload multiple files in a single operation. This is handled through a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

Custom Producer Logo

This allows you to brand your content with your own logo. Your logo shows up in search results and on the playback page for any uploaded content. This helps to distinguish your content from SAFARI Montage licensed content.

Interactive Quizzes

Create quizzes to associate with your uploaded content.

Wider LDAP Support

New LDAP technologies have been added. SAFARI Montage now supports the following LDAP formats:

  • Active Directory (Windows NT/2000/2003)
  • Open Directory (Mac OS X) NEW!
  • eDirectory (Novell) NEW!
  • OpenLDAP (Linux, BSD, and variants) NEW!

Data Recovery

Your personal content may now be backed up to a destination on your network. Personal content includes playlists, recent searches, dashboards, and user accounts. Systems with CreationStation installed also have the option of backing up the uploaded video, audio, and image files. Backups can be placed on a weekly schedule or performed manually at any time.

Collapsible Sub-Menu

Sub-navigation menu has been organized into categories. The categories collapse when not in use to save space.

SAFARI Montage 1.1.3 Release Notes

Released: 12/9/2005

Dashboard

  • “Last Videos Played” links now gray out if video is expired
  • “Last Videos Played” panel renamed to “My Recent Videos.” This more accurately describes the contents of that panel and conforms to the style of the other panels on the Dashboard.

Video Playback

  • Fixed Teacher’s Guide & Data Sheet links disappearing when playing a chapter or key concept if QuickTime is set as the preferred player
  • Firefox 1.0.x - fixed “ERROR: invalid input syntax for integer”
  • Firefox 1.0.x - fixed Teacher’s Guide link disappearing from DRP when adding a segment
  • Safari 1.0 on Mac OS 10.2 - Fixed fullscreen video playback
  • Safari 1.0 on Mac OS 10.2 - Fixed browser crashing issues on video details and playlist playback pages.
  • IE 5.1 on Mac OS 9 - Fixed fullscreen video playback
  • IE 5.1 on Mac OS 9 - Fixed browser crashing issues on video details and playlist playback pages.
  • Safari 2.0 - Fixed alignment of key concept icons

General

  • Improved default cursor location on numerous pages.
  • Fixed expiration issue with duplicate titles existing between different packages (e.g., K-8 and 9-12). If one package expired before the other, the title would not show.
  • Fixed several issues surrounding users not having a player preference on dual-format systems. Player preference is now defaulted to Windows Media Player for all new user accounts.
  • Expired Content message was displaying to all users. It now only shows to Administrators.
  • Username and password validation now indicates “no spaces.”
  • Improved LDAP login failure messaging
  • Fixed issue with “Add to Playlist” checkmark icons failing to indicate title’s playlist existence after switching player formats.
  • Fixed running time inconsistency between search results page and video details page due to rounding. Running times for titles less then one minute are now displayed in seconds. Running times over one minute are rounded to the nearest minute.
  • Video player adheres more closely to user’s player preference. On dual-format SAFARI Montage servers, videos played back from Shared Playlists or My Recent Videos panel were playing in the format in which they were originally saved, rather than the preferred format of the user.
  • Spaces are now truncated from usernames upon login. This will decrease login failures.

Bookmarking

  • Fixed issue with manual End Point time entry
  • Fixed “Segment from Program” link missing from some bookmarks
  • When adding a bookmark of a bookmark of a QuickTime video, the entire video would be saved to the Playlist rather than the bookmark.
  • “Add to Playlist” checkbox icon no longer remains checked after In and Out points are modified using the Start Point and End Point links.
  • “Add to Playlist” checkbox no longer appears when previewing a Windows Media video segment.

Playlists

  • Items could be added to a deleted playlist using certain combinations of the Back button and clicks.
  • The term “Preschool” was standardized as “Pre-K” throughout the application
  • Usability improvements on Playlist decision page when attempting to add to a shared playlist or no playlist: better layout, consistency and conciseness of element and control names, reduction in wordiness and visual noise, removed redundant buttons, and improved user messaging.
  • Fixed “Play All” link remaining active when all items are expired
  • Fixed button highlighting on Playlists sub-navigation bar
  • When one video format expires prior to the other in the same package, the system will play the video in the unexpired format. (This is only a safeguard. This scenario should never happen in practice because dual-formats will always expire simultaneously.)
  • Refined duplicate checking logic when user is naming a Playlist. If playlist is shared, check for duplicates amongst all shared playlists (including user's own shared playlists). If playlist is not shared, check for duplicates in the user's personal playlists only.
  • “Add to Playlist” link on the Playlist playback page was redirecting to the video playback page.

Settings and Tools

  • Nightly Update - Added a link to Release Notes on SAFARI Montage website
  • Nightly Update - Usability enhancements. Cancel buttons removed. Simplified buttons to read simply, “Update.”
  • Account Management - Reset Password, Delete, and Active buttons keep the user on the current page.
  • Account Management, Edit and Delete User - Update/Delete and Cancel buttons return the user to the page they were previously browsing in the user list.
  • Account Management - friendlier error messaging for uploading bad files
  • Account Management, Edit User - Validation message now indicates “no spaces.”
  • Set Time Zone - drop-down box now persists selection. Added notification to user that changing the time zone will affect the system time.
  • Set Time Zone - functions correctly on Xserve version of SAFARI Montage
  • Add Multiple Users - Password is now validated per system-wide password validation rules
  • Add Multiple Users - More robust error checking and more verbose error messaging. Indicates exactly which records failed and why (e.g, duplicate username, invalid username or password, etc.)
  • My Preferences & Settings - Media Player Preference no longer shows on Mac OS clients. Preference should not show because Mac clients may only view QuickTime videos.
  • System Settings - Improved LDAP configuration usability. “LDAP Groups” and “LDAP Connection” subnav buttons appear when LDAP is active. “Connection” and “Groups” links appear near the “Enable LDAP” drop-down when LDAP is active.
  • Software Updates and Activation - Access to Montage is locked down when update is in progress. Prevents any user accesses from interfering with the update.
  • Software Updates and Activation - Improved user feedback
  • Content Packages, Manual Activation - Improved validation messaging when user fails to enter Activation ID or Password.
  • LDAP Connection - Improved error message when connection to LDAP server fails or could not be authenticated.
  • Network Settings - Certain operations that require a server restart or caused the IP address to change gave a false impression of failure or success. Improved overall user messaging in this regard.
  • Network Settings (Xserve) - Changing the network settings now reboots the server to avoid some intermittent erratic behavior when not rebooting.
  • Network Settings (Xserve) - Fixed Gateway sometimes showing “link #4.”
  • Network Settings (Xserve) - Interface names were not fixed and were not addressable by name.
  • Network Settings (Xserve) - “Set Time Zone” was taking two clicks to register the change at top of page.
  • Network Settings - Non-alphanumeric characters are stripped from hostname field. This will prevent the error, “syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution.”
  • Add New Content - Fixed “Record not found” error when cancelling out of license agreement.
  • Add New Content, License Agreement - Fixed some rare cases in which the Cancel button would return the user to the Dashboard.
  • License Agreement - Improved error messaging when attempting to continue without accepting both terms.
  • Change Password - Password validation message now indicates “no spaces.”
  • LDAP Groups - sorted alphabetically
  • LDAP (Xserve) - SAFARI Montage is now honoring primary group assignments on an OS X open directory server.
  • Reboot - Added text to inform user that a reboot is about to happen.
  • Change Hostname - Cancel button was returning user to the Reboot and Shutdown page.

Standards

  • Fixed pagination when returning from video details page
  • Fixed counts incorrectly including expired titles
  • Subjects in drop-down sorted alphabetically
  • Message “Results X to Y out of Z” was inaccurate when using “Return to Standards Results” link.
  • Fixed issue with incorrect result counts when From grade was set greater than To grade.
  • Curriculum Correlations updated
  • Fixed stray character in California standards
  • Fixed issue with Florida standards when clicking “Refine Search”
